Baltic Dry Index 965 (+19) Baltic Capesize Index 1331 (+106) Baltic Panamax Index 1098 (+3) Baltic Supramax Index 779 (-4) Baltic Handysize Index 492 (-4)

CAPESIZE
A firmer day for the big ships with rates moving higher in most areas with the key West Australia/China route kicking off the gains. Rates from Brazil and from the north Atlantic were also stronger.

ATLANTIC
Panocean took the Gothia, a 178,006-dwt 2012-built Phaethon relet from Seven Islands to China at $17.85. Earlier NSSMC awarded a tender to NYK to move a 17-31 August 150,000-tonne 10% cargo from Nouadhibou to Qingdao at $16.20. Sources said the Anangel Prosperity 174,240-dwt 2006-built coming from El Dekheila was earlier reported on subjects for a trip to the east at $20,000 daily but little else emerged.
From Brazil, Oldendorff fixed the 169,092-dwt 2010-built Cape Spencer eta Tubarao 20 August for a cargo from Tubarao to Qingdao at $13.60. Earlier Hyundai Glovis booked the 2011-built 175,125-dwt ABYO Audrey on the same run at $13.45.

ASIA
Here FMG was rumoured to have fixed more than one ship from Port Hedland to Qingdao at $6.20 but so far only a SwissMarine was linked with the charterer at this rate. Earlier FMG booked the 2004-built Gloriuship for a 10-12 August cargo on this run at $6.00. Rio Tinto was said to have taken the Equator Prosper a 2000-built Navios relet for a 14-16 August cargo for 170,000-tonnes 10% from Dampier to Qingdao. BHP Billiton had been looking to fix on an e-tender basis today setting a cap at $5.90 but it appeared to have failed.
Timecharter talk included a report that Hyundai Glovis booked the 2017-built 181,000-tonner Herun China from Zhangjiagang for an Australian round at a rate in the low $16,000s daily.


PANAMAX
There was generally a steadier tone to the market but so far not overly busy. The north Atlantic remained very slow but there appeared to be a touch more fixing from South America. Earlier fresh business from Indonesia prompted some fixing and there was interest for period tonnage.
MG Harrison Shipping Pool booked the 82,790-dwt 2008-built Navios Harmony spot Lanshan for 4 to 7 months trading at $10,000 daily. Having been working voyage business, the Siberian Express 92,974-dwt 2012-built open Yantai 4-5 August fixed for 4 to 6 months trading at $9,750 daily but a charterer was not reported.

ATLANTIC
D'Amico was said to be on subjects with an LME or Kamsarmax for delivery Continent around 10 August for a single trip or 2 to 3 legs with the first to the Mediterranean. Details have yet to surface. Cobelfret has a 13-19 August 70,000-tonne 10% cargo on subjects from Baltimore to Ijmuiden but again little emerged.
Transgrain took the Xenia 82,019-dwt 2016-built prompt Cape Passero for a trip from the Black Sea to Spain but the rate was not disclosed. However, the Golden Empress 79,463-dwt 2010-built Taranto spot went for a trip via the Black Sea to Turkey at $9,000 daily but the charterer was not disclosed.
In the US Gulf it was reported today that Bunge booked the Omegra relet Star Renee 82,221-dwt 2006-built fixed from the US Gulf 10-20 August for the run east via the Cape of Good Hope at $14,500 daily plus a $450,000 bonus.
From South America, Norden was linked with an 87,000-tonner for an end August position from the east coast to Indonesia at $10,500 daily plus a $550,000 bonus.
There had been talk that a 2012-built 81,000-tonner fixed for a 6-7 August position from east coast South America to the Red Sea but others suggested the ship was working period business. A 2005-built 75,000-tonner which sailed Haldia fixed retroactively for a trip via east coast South America to the east with a grain house allegedly around $10,000 daily.

ASIA
Here the 93,250-dwt 2012-built TW Manila open Zhoushan 3 August fixed a trip via east coast Australia to Taiwan at something over $8,500 daily but the charterer was not disclosed.
Earlier the 82,620-dwt 2013-built Eva open 5-6 August Zhanjiang fixed for a trip from east coast Australia to east coast India at $8,500 daily with a South Korean charterer. The 79,642-dwt 2011-built Unity N open 6 August Mariveles fixed basis east Kalimantan to South Korea at $9,000 daily plus a $30,000 bonus but the charterer was not reported. Minmetals has a Kamsarmax on subjects open south China for a trip via south Indonesia to north China but a rate was not reported while Oldendorff has a 17-23 August cargo on subjects from Bunbury to the Persian Gulf and had been looking for a Panamax or Kamsarmax. Klaveness reportedly has a Kamsarmax prompt in the east on subjects from Port Latta to Singapore-Japan in the high $7,000s daily.


ULTRAMAX/SUPRAMAX
Brokers still suggested the Black Sea-Mediterranean was holding firm but with little fully fixed as yet. They also said there was some resistance from owners/operators in the US Gulf especially for the front haul trips and similarly from east coast South America despite a reasonable amount of tonnage in the area. In the Pacific, rates remained weak with a lack of activity impacting on sentiment.

ATLANTIC
There was talk of a 63,000-dwt fixing last week at $13,500 daily from Vancouver to Manzanillo. The Aruna Ece 55,506-dwt 2012-built delivery Icdas was rumoured to have fixed at a rate in the mid $15,000 for a trip to Chittagong. The Glovis Madrid 56,605-dwt 2013-built open Liverpool was reportedly booked on voyage basis with scrap via Riga and Tallinn to Iskenderun in the mid $20.00s per tonne.

ASIA
After being fixed in for a short period, the Huayang Rose 63,700-dwt 2016-built was relet for a nickel ore trip via the Philippines to China at $9,350 daily as the first laden leg. A 49,000-dwt open in the Philippines went for 2 laden legs redelivery in the SingaporeJapan range at a rate in the high $9,000s. Norden was rumoured to have fixed a 48,000-dwt open south China for about 4 to 7 months trading at $8,000 daily.


HANDYSIZE
A quiet day from this sector today and routes across the board all losing ground.

ATLANTIC
The Eftichia 34,146-dwt 2011-built was rumoured fixed for a trip via US east coast-US Gulf to west coast South America with grains in the low-butmid teens with grains but further details remained under wraps. The Corsair 35,062-dwt 2001-built was reported booked at $ 8,200 daily to Lalemant basis delivery where when ready Ghent for a scrap run to the eastern Mediterranean. Brokers also reported Ultrabulk taking the Reunion Bay 32,354-dwt 2006-built basis delivery Esbjerg prompt for a trip via Baltic redelivery Buena Ventura $9,500 daily.

ASIA
