CAPESIZE
A Friday and still holidays in China but the market recovered after the mid-week debacle ending the week at the highs. Most had expected an uneventful week with the Chinese and South Koreans off for the majority of the week but in the east a typhoon upset the balance and shippers from West Australia found they had to re-adjust schedules with ships delays and continue booking cargoes. Some nervous owners booked at lower levels at the sart of the week and then the market lost 75 cents but today the last rumoured trade was done at $5.90 up 5 cents from a week ago. Owners were now wanting over $6.00.
Rio Tinto booked the Mount Hedland for a 1-3 October 170,000-tonne 10% from Dampier to Qingdao at $5.90 and then there was talk that SwissMarine also fixed a ship to Rio at $5.85. Prior to that the charterer took the ABYO Audrey 2011-built at $5.70 and the Star Princess 2003-built at $5.75.
FMG today took tonnage for end September for 160,000-tonnes 10% from Port Hedland to Qingdao at a stronger $6.00.
EdF opened late last night UK time and fixed today the Hermina 2012-built 176,000-dwt Jintang 20 September for a West Australia round at $11,500 daily sources said this is a well described vessel.
There was talk that the Fortune 182,000-dwt 2016-built Shanghai 22 September was said to have fixed for an Australian round at $15,000 daily, but a charterer was not reported.
Libra was said to have covered a Richards Bay/Mundra cargo at $6.75. Uniper reportedly fixed a cargo from Saldanha to Qingdao at a stronger $8.90, but details were not disclosed.
Rates were definitely firmer but in many instances, it has yet to be clarified rates mentioned were actually basis Tubarao or Acu.
NYK was said to have taken the CCL relet Golden Fulham 182,000-dwt 2016-built eta 9-12 October Brazil for a cargo to Qingdao at $12.40 but most were not clear whether this rate was basis Acu or Tubarao.
Earlier today there was talk that Trafigura fixed the RWE relet Herun Global 180,000-dwt 2016-built from Brazil to Qingdao. The charterer usually books cargo from Sudeste and a rate of $11.75 was mentioned but again whether this was Sudeste or Tubarao was not clear.
Late Wednesday SwissMarine booked CCL tonnage for a 13 October onwards cargo from Puerto Bolivar at $6.15 basis Rotterdam.
Late talk suggested Bunge covered a Drummond/Sines cargo, but details were not reported.
Cargill was also said to have taken an EdF vessel for a cargo from Ponta Da Madeira to Ijmuiden for a 1-10 October cargo at a rate in the low $6.00s.
Cargill Thursday reportedly took the Berge Kinabalu 177,173-dwt 2003-built open Amsterdam 22-26 September for a trip via Narvik to the Continent at $10,000 daily.
Short period rates remained buoyant and Jiangsu Steamship booked the Anangel Argonaut 177,835-dwt 2009-built from Shanghai prompt. The ship was reported at $10,250 daily for 4 to 7 months trading but was understood to have agreed $10,500 daily for 4 to 8 months.
A couple of CPO vessels were reported for period with some suggesting the result of the Hanjin fall-out. The CPO Asia 2011-built and the CPO Europe 2011-built both 180,000 dwt were reported fixed for 5 to 7 months trading with the former Yeosu and the latter north China at $7,500 daily with SwissMarine but some said the details were incorrect and the rate was in the upper $7,000s. Others said neither vessel was fixed.

PANAMAX
Rates here steadied with even talk of a touch more activity north Atlantic for transatlantic whether US east coast, the Baltic or Mediterranean but gains so far were minimal.
The key action remained in the US Gulf where charterers have been quietly picking off tonnage for trips to the east and brokers said Chinese charterers were in the market despite the holiday. There too were cargoes still being fixed from east coast South America and rates thus far were steady.
As expected activity in the east was negligible and even in Singapore many were already preparing for the F1 weekend.
