CAPESIZE
A positively active day with rates still moving. In the east, Rio Tinto was busy fixing 4 or even 5 ships. The rumours began with Rio Tinto fixing possibly the CIC Pride for a 19 September 170,000-tonne 10% cargo from Dampier to Qingdao at $5.35 then came a report the charterer booked the Ocean Road, a 2009-built SwissMarine relet at $5.40 for 22 September onwards. The charterer too was said to have paid this rate to the Louis Dreyfus relet Nightwing 2004-built while there was some debate as to who had fixed the Cape Saturn, 175,882-dwt 2003-built. The ship was linked with Rio Tinto and then with Classic Maritime at $5.75 (though this would be basis $299,000 lumpsum disbursements. However, some denied the ship went to the later charterer. There too was some discussion that Rio Tinto paid $5.50, but again further names have yet to emerge. Earlier Oldendorff booked the Pitsa D 2012-built for a 170,000-tonne 10% cargo from West Australia to China at $5.35. Caravel fixed the C. Atlas to replace the Yuritamou for a cargo from West Australia to China at $5.38 the later ship was missing its cancelling and was originally fixed at $4.80. It emerged that the Cargill booked the 2010-built Hebei Universe 180,407-dwt earlier, which sailed Lanshan 4 September, for a West Australia to China in the upper $4.00s, but this was done earlier this week.
Timecharter rates too continued to move with the MOL booking the Global Mercator 2011-built 182,307-dwt from Taicang 12-15 September for a West Australia round at $12,000 daily. The Leviathan 2014-built 182,511-dwt open Jingtang 10-13 September fixed for a round with initial reports at $11,750 daily but others suggesting the rate was over $12,500 daily.
BHP Billiton reportedly covered a cargo from Hay Point to Rotterdam at an improved number, but detail was in short supply. Some brokers said the rate was in the $8.00 range, but again this was more a guess than factual.
Brazil rates continued to strengthen with rumours that the Gotia, a 2012-built Phaethon relet fixed to Engelhart for Tubarao to Qingdao at $11.00. The ship was eta end September.
The Goliath, 2015-built 209,000-dwt was linked to Polaris for a trip from Brazil to the east at $11,650 daily plus a $230,000 bonus. Polaris was also said to have fixed a cargo from Tubarao to Qingdao for 1-10 October at $11.25.
Transatlantic rates improved with NYK paying a SwissMarine relet $5.75 for a 20-30 September cargo from Puerto Bolivar to Rotterdam with an option of Zonguldak at $6.00. Navig8 conceded $5.85 to a SwissMarine vessel for similar dates at $5.85 with a Turkey rate option agreed on a timecharter equivalent.,

PANAMAX
Atlantic rates either transatlantic or front haul languished in the doldrums. There was little activity on short haul or longer rounds and rates from the US Gulf were uninspiring but going forward there were expectations that October should be more active. Further south, there were some improved rates rumoured.
In the east, the market remained a game of two halves with some improvement seen for ships trading NoPac but today the pace appeared to have slowed.
Period talk included the 2015-built 81,800-dwt was said on subjects for Vietnam delivery for 5 to 8 months trading at a rate in the high $6,000s daily.
The Bravery 2004-built 76,606-dwt Chiwan prompt fixed last week to MOL for 4 to 7 months trading. Initial reports put the rate at $5,650 daily, but this said incorrect and the rate agreed was closer to $6,000 daily than $5,650 daily.

Further south, a 2014-built 82,134-dwt Billy Jim, coming from the east and eta 21 September east coast South America, was rumoured booked earlier on subjects for the run east at a tick under $8,000 daily plus a $300,000 bonus. The Yangtze Xin Jin 81,649-dwt 2012-built was linked with Louis Dreyfus on this run at $8,000 daily and $300,000.
The 78,888-dwt 2008-built Unicorn Ocean due prompt Gibraltar has gone on subjects. The Athina Carras 2012-built Kamsarmax was reported fixing a 60,000-tonne 10% ore cargo from Kokkola to Immingham at $4.60 with TS Global, but this report was said to be incorrect.

A coal lift from US east coast to the Baltic was placed on subjects but further details were not disclosed.
