CAPESIZE
A slow cranking up in activity but rates remained in the doldrums in essentially a relatively illiquid market with the odd blip that largely looked unrepeatable. Having said that, some said the last done gave little guide to the next to be done. The cargo count up to now been steady preventing significant falls. The last quarter remained a challenge with now spot rates moving and uncertainty going forward.
In the east, the West Australia/China rate largely steady with Rio Tinto fixing the Guo May 176,000-dwt 2011-built for a 12-13 September 170,000-tonne 10% cargo from Dampier to Qingdao at $4.60. BHP Billiton was also said to have fixed at the same rate from Port Hedland, but a name was not disclosed. The 178,829-dwt 2012-built K. Foundation was rumoured as a ship fixed to Rio Tinto Tuesday, but the ship was said still in the market. The Alpha Bravery 2011-built was said to be the ship Rio fixed at $4.70.
Hyundai Glovis Tuesday reportedly fixed a ship to make 11 September West Australia for a trip to Qingdao.
Classic Maritime was said to have fixed the Navios Fulvia 179,263-dwt 2010-built, the Ocean Emperor 180,077-dwt 2012-built and the Huang Shan 175,980-dwt 2003-built at $4.90 for the former and $4.85 for the latter two all based on $299,000 disbursements. There was also a suggestion the charterer to a Fuk Hing vessel.
There was some Brazil trading with Anglo American fixing the Cape Providence 2009-built SwissMarine relet for a 14-18 September 170,000-tonne 10% cargo from Acu to Qingdao at $10.00.
Vale Tuesday was linked with the Mineral Hope 2012-built for a midish September cargo from Tubarao to Qingdao at a rate based on 30 August C3 BCI rate of $9.632. The charterer was rumoured booking tonnage at $9.75, but this was denied. Cargill earlier took the Yasa Dream 2008-built for a 20-25 September 180,000-tonne 10% cargo from CSN to Qingdao at $9.70 with a total of 1.25%.
Further north, Oldendorff secured an Hyundai Glovis tender to move a 21-30 September 120,000-tonne 10% cargo from the US east coast to South Korea at $15.79 창?혫 a rate showing around $12,000 daily on a BCI type but this was open to interpretation. Oldendorff was now said to have fixed a ship in for the trip, but details were not reported. Cargill was linked with the Lowlands Tenacity 179,929-dwt 2011-built for a trip from Gibraltar for a trip via east coast Canada to China at $12,250 daily.
The same charterer was also reported booking CCL tonnage for a 10-15 September 160,000-tonne 10% from Puerto Bolivar to Rotterdam at $4.90, but some said this rate was not repeatable.

PANAMAX
There was some fixing in the Atlantic and generally the market looked flat with little excitement in any area of the market.
In the east, Post Pananaxes appeared to be doing better compared to their smaller sisters with Panamax/Kamsarmax rates barely holding above $5,000 daily probably less for the older smaller types.
There remained period interest in the market but again owners for now appeared reluctant to take business on offer. The Ecoan G.O., a 75,131-dwt 2008-built XO relet fixed for 1-5 September delivery southeast Asia at $5,500 daily for 4 to 8 months trading (not 5 to 10 months as earlier reported) with the first leg a cargo from West Australia. There were various reports of the Beteigeuze, 77,089-dwt 2007-built fixing either period of a single trip, but it appeared the ship fixed and failed for spot delivery north China for a short period with some suggesting the rate was $6,700 daily for 6 to 9 months trading. Pacific Basin was originally reported as taking the ship for a single trip to the Mediterranean with steels at $2,150 daily.
The Pedhoulas Leader 82,050-dwt 2007-built open Yangjiang early September went in direct continuation for 4 to 7 months trading at $6,500 daily with the charterer possibly Engie.

ATLANTIC
The 2005-built Heina 76,598-dwt fixed for a 9-13 September 70,000-tonne 10% coal cargo from Norfolk and Baltimore to Sepetiba at $7.70. Earlier Hudson booked the 82,937-dwt 2013-built Ibis Wind for 15-30 September delivery US east coast for a trip to Brazil at $5,250 daily.
Tata allegedly booked the Medi Venezia 76,602-dwt 2005-built for a cargo from Ventspils to Ijmuiden at just $4.20.
The Copernicus N 93,062-dwt 2010-built open Continent 3 September reportedly went to Noble for a Murmansk round, but a rate was not reported.
Fronthaul trading was largely static with the 2013-built 81,600-dwt Bergen Trader II agreed $9,750 daily for retroactive delivery Gibraltar 26 August for a trip via the US Gulf to the east via the Cape of Good Hope, but a charterer was not reported.
Having failed for a trip the Continent at $10,000 daily for a petcoke cargo, the Darwin 2002-built 73,870-dwt went to Transgrain for 8-11 September delivery US Gulf for the run east at $9,500 daily plus a $180,000 bonus.
From South America, trading was slow but there was vague talk a major grain house has tonnage on subjects at lower levels.

ASIA
Vattenfall was linked with the 2010-built 82,194-dwt open Phu My 1-3 September for a trip via Indonesia to Japan at under $5,000 daily.
There was talk earlier that the Great Triumph 2015-built 78,000-dwt open Cai Lan 6 September was said on subjects for a trip via Fangcheng to India at $6,000 daily, but a charterer was not reported.
The Ada 81,400-dwt 2016-built spot Qinhuangdao went to Sinoeast for a trip via east coast Australia to India. Initial reports put the rate at $5,500 daily but owners said the level was in excess and sources close to the owners suggesting it was $6,000 daily or near $6,000 daily.
Jiangsu Steamship booked the 95,349-dwt 2012-built KM Nagoya open 8-10 September Taichung at about $6,000 daily for an Australian round.
The 98,681-dwt 2011-built Amami prompt Qingdao allegedly achieved a strong $8,000 daily for an east coast Australian round with Pacific Bulk but it was not clear when the business was done.
The Christina IV 72,493-dwt 1999-built open Weihai 3-6 September was said on subjects for a round voyage in the east, but details were not disclosed.
Guodian booked the Ad Astra 2015-built from Xiamen 1-4 September for a trip via West Australia to the east at $5,250 daily.

SUPRAMAX
A bit more activity with sources suggesting that the US Gulf and east coast South America markets were coming under some pressure.

ATLANTIC
The Oceanlady 56,803-dwt 2013-built was rumoured fixed basis delivery east coast South America for a trip Singapore-Japan at $10,000 daily plus a $100,000 ballast bonus. Sources also suggested that MUR took the Fermita 52,380-dwt 2001-built for an east coast South America front haul at similar levels. It was rumoured that a 57,000-dwt was on subjects basis delivery Recalada for a trip Skaw-Passero in the mid $9,000s with a large grain house but further details remained under wraps.
An unnamed Ultramax was linked to a scrap run from the the Baltic to the east Mediterranean at around $11,000 daily with a Russian charterer. A 54,000-dwt 2011-built was said to be on subjects below $9,000 daily for a Continent scrap run to the east Mediterranean but further details remained elusive

ASIA
A 56,000-dwt 2011-built open South China was rumoured to be on subjects for a nickel ore run via Philippines redelivery China at $7,000 daily. A 58,044-dwt 2012 built open CJK was said fixed via the Philippines redelivery China with nickel ore at $7,750 daily. The E.R. Bilbao 2009-built was fixed basis delivery Singapore for a trip via Indonesia redelivery China at $7,500 daily with Tongli. Various rumours circulated re period business involving an Ultramax size but specific details remained scarce. A 55,000-dwt was rumoured to have fixed basis delivery Singapore for a trip via Indonesia redelivery India in the low $9,000s but litle else emerged.

HANDYSIZE
A flat day with little change across the routes
A handy was rumoured to have been on subjects for a logs run via the Baltic to Egypt at around $8,000 daily. In the east a 28,000 was linked to a trip from Japan to Hong Kong at $8,000 which brokers suggested was a strong rate.
