CAPESIZE
A strong end to the week with all areas recording gains with charterers still eyeing tonnage for period business. A Brazil/West Australia combo drove the market with Vale taking upwards of 7 ships combined and some of the miners plus other charterers picking off ships from West Australia. There was still action as the day progressed but much of it behind the scenes, brokers said. Period fixing was beginning to emerge with talk today that SwissMarine took the Star Lady 171,877-dwt 2005-built, which sailed China 8 March for a BCI-linked period but the detail was not disclosed. It emerged today that Rio Tinto also took the 187,000-dwt 2016-built for two years trading at $17,000 daily as well as the sistership Cape America a week or more ago. A Star Bulk Newcastlemax Star Ariadne was also rumoured booked for period a week ago possibly for 2 years.

ATLANTIC
There were improved numbers talked for cargoes from Puerto Bolivar to Rotterdam with allegedly bids earlier at $7.10 with the last done Thursday at $6.50. Not all the details emerged of Vale fixing emerged but rates rumoured ranged from the low $14.00s up to $15.00 and talk that the charterer did not fix out of Ponta Da Madeira.
Caravel took the RWE vessel for 3 April cancelling from Tubarao to Qingdao and not Caravel. Trafigura was rumoured to have taken the Solar Ember 171,081-dwt 1997-built for a 1-10 April cargo from Sud Este to Qingdao at a rate in the low $15.00s with some suggestion the charterer took more than the one ship.

ASIA
There was some debate as to how many ships Rio Tinto took today with some suggestion the miner took five vessels. Rio Tinto allegedly booked two SwissMarine vessels at $6.45 and the 2004-built KWK Providence at $6.50 from Dampier to Qingdao but reports the charterer fixed more in excess of this was denied. FMG too entered the market booking the Pan Advance 2009-bujilt for a 24 March onwards 160,000-tonne 10% cargo from Port Hedland to Qingdao at $6.,55 and allegedly an EPS ship at the same rate. There was a rumour CCL tonnage went at $6.70 for the C5 run but this proved incorrect.
The 180,000-dwt 2012-built Minnetonka fixed Thursday for a 23-25 March cargo from West Australia to Qingdao, but a rate was not disclosed.
Oldendorff allegedly fixed the Shine On 179,406-dwt 2015-built from Tianjin for an Australian round at a strong $16,000 daily.
The 181,068-dwt 2015-built Seafighter sailed Rizhao 8 March and was reported today fixing to Sinochart for a Saldanha Bay round, but a rate was not reported. Sedibeng reportedly took an EdF vessel for an 18-25 March 170,000-tonne 10% cargo from Saldanha Bay to Qingdao at $11.75.

PANAMAX
Overall a still healthier Panamax market but with a few question marks appearing. The improved north Atlantic rates were largely sentiment-driven limited new business and a longer list of ships. Here rates have started to soften and could continue to slip. Some of the early ships have set off in balance to just a touch more uncertain US Gulf and South America market. Rates have been very strong from east coast South America but the pace slowed and signs that charterers now focussing on later April positions leaving some March loaders a touch more risk
In the east, rates were largely steady with some brokers suggesting there remained enough cargoes to lend support and some still good rates emerged today although little fresh reported traded.
Period trading slowed as the week closed out although the 79,600-dwt 2011-built King Peace open 18-20 March Jintang allegedly went at $9,000 daily for 4 to 7 months trading. A charterer was not disclosed. In the Atlantic, the Glorious Wind 83,410-dwt 2010-built open Civitavecchia 15 March fixed and failed for a minimum period up to 5 August and maximum 5 September at $13,000 daily with Norden.

ATLANTIC
It emerged that the 83,366-dwt 2011-built Buenos Aires open Tilbury fixed grain from the Continent or Baltic with redelivery Cape Passero at $11,000 daily but a charterer was not reported.
The 76,602-dwt 2004-built Navios Orbiter, a Cargill relet, was said on subjects with Ultrabulk for a woodchip cargo from the US Gulf to the Continent with a rumour the rate was $12,000 daily plus a $200,000 bonus while others said the daily rate was $10,000 daily.
The PRT Kaho 77,113-dwt 2014-built open Port Talbot allegedly fixed for a US east coast/Skaw-Passero with coal in the low $10,000s. The charterer was not disclosed and there was a suggestion that ship fixed on a voyage basis.
In the Mediterranean-Black Sea, there was talk that the 77,033-dwt 2006-built Clara spot Contanza fixed for a trip from the Black Sea to Egypt at $11,500 daily with Paccship. ADM withdrew a Panamax cargo from the Black Sea to the Italian Adriatic and will be shipped in smaller sizes.
The TW Hamburg 93,230-dwt 2012-built open Recalada 16-17 March was reported on subjects for a transatlantic run while Louis Dreyfus covered a 25 March-5 April cargo from Itaguai to the Red Sea on voyage basis. The same charterer earlier booked the Huayang Legend 76,945-dwt 2003-built retroactive Haldia for an east coast South American round at $11,500 daily.
The shallow-drafted Bunge relet Ionic Pride 2017-built 84,700-dwt fixed basis Gibraltar for a trip to the east at close to $17,000 daily. Sinoeast covered a 1-10 April cargo from the Orinoco to China and it was not clear if the vessel went for this business.
The Ocean Phoenix 1 82,471-dwt 2007-built was likely fixed to Raffles for a cargo from north Brazil to the east around $14,000 daily retroactive sailing Ijmuiden.
The Cobelfret relet W-Ace 92,803-dwt 2011-built due 10 March Cape Passero was also rumoured booked business to the east with some suggesting Ashley took the ship at $13,500 daily.
From South America, the 74,410-dwt 2001-built Johnny P due 1-10 April east coast South America was said on subjects with Cargill retroactive to sailing Singapore at a tick over $11,000 daily. Bunge earlier paid the 79,501-dwt 2012-built Sea Trellis $11,000 daily basis 12 March Haldia on this run. The 81,800-dwt 2015-built Evmar was said fixed for a trip from east coast South America eta 27 March to the east at a still strong rate but details remained private.

ASIA
Here the Star Angelina 2006-built 82,000-dwt open Matsuura 15-18 March reportedly went for a NoPac round at close to $12,000 daily with some suggesting $12,200 daily was agreed and this possibly for the MOL pet coke cargo. It emerged that the 82,224-dwt 2006-built Star Nina also open Japan fixed a NoPac grain round at the beginning of the week at $11,750 daily. A 2016-built eco Kamsarmax open Qingdao 14 March was said to have seen $11,200 daily for a NoPac round.

However, the Shun Chang 92,500-dwt 2010-built open Lanshan 12 March was reported on subjects for a trip via Australia to China at $9,750 daily.

ULTRAMAX/SUPRAMAX
A quiet day to end the week with more activity still coming from the East. The market was waiting to see some direction when it opens again next week.

ATLANTIC
The Thor Breeze 53,572-dwt 2013-built open in Corpus Cristi failed on subjects for a trip to Japan at mid $17,000s with a minimum duration of 55 days. More brokers felt a down trend on taking vessels from US Gulf for both Far East and Continent-Mediterranean redelivery.

PACIFIC
A 45,000-dwt was rumoured to have fixed at a rate in the high $7,000s delivery South Korea to Penang. A 55,00-dwt non-grabber open in north China was fixed on subjects at $9,000 daily with steels to west coast India. The Asia Ruby III 63,023-dwt 2014-dwt open Qingdao was fully fixed for a trip via Indonesia to west coast India at $11,000 daily. A 43,500-dwt 2016-built open in mid China was fixed for a trip to the Continent at $6,000 daily for the first 60 days and $8,750 daily for the balance. The BHSI maintained a positive movement on all routes especially on the trade with Recalada-Rio de Janeiro range delivery to Skaw-Passero redelivery. Brokers noticed some off-market cargo from the US Gulf being fixed to the Far East but details were not reported.
In the East, the Cielo di Amalfi 37,322-dwt 2007-built open in Indonesia 21-22 March was rumoured to have fixed for a trip via Australia to China at $10,000 daily.
