CAPESIZE
An interesting day as rates fell again on all the published routes and yet brokers were saying there was a premium for February loading on Tubarao to Qingdao.
There was market chatter regarding the BHP e-auction for their 22/28 Febraury cargo which was said to have been won basis $4.46 rate. Some have said it was Cargill who then relet the cargo for $4.40 others have said Oldendorff were the winning bid.
Shourong were reported to have fixed tonnage for 21/25 February for west Australia to Qingdao at around $4.40.
Oldendorff were said to have taken the BaoSteel tender cargo from Port Hedland to Zhangjiang basis 24 Febraury onwards at around $4.00 level.
The Alpha Optimism (179,299 built 2016) fixed Saldanha Bay to Qingdao for 1/10 March at $7.50 with NYK.
Caravel tonnage fixed Robertsbank to Jintang for 19/28 February with Tech Coal but no rates has been disclosed.
Polaris fixed tonnage for Huasco to Cigading early March at around $11.00 level.
On Tubarao to Qingdao there were rumours of maybe a fixture being done in the $10.70 level, but no specifics have emerged.
No result out so far for the Port Cartier to Japan NSSMC cargo loading end February/early March.
Similarly we are waiting to hear the outcome of Shandong's Pepel to Qingdao early March cargo.

PANAMAX
Brokers were saying a bit more activity from the North Atlantic helped slow the drop on the Transatlantic business , however pressure remains on the South Atlantic with a number of committed vessels still in ballast. The Asian market had volume which lead to better rates being achieved but whether this can be sustained is another matter, some brokers commented.

ULTRAMAX/SUPRAMAX
A few more reported fixtures today within the Atlantic but rates tending to be down on last done with Charterers still trying to talk rates down further. The Asian sector continued its recent rally and brokers believing the tide had turned.

Some similar-sized vessel also open in the Far East was linked to a steel trip to US Gulf at a rate close to mid $1,000s.

HANDYSIZE
No respite for the Atlantic and people thinking there was no improvement on the horizon at the moment. There was talk of tonnage ballasting in to east coast South America from South Africa which was having a continued negative effect on levels. A complete contrast in Southern Asia with sentiment changing and talk of a scarcity of vessels currently available. North Asia would need time to clear out the early tonnage that were still open.

From the Continent, the Lady Demet 2012 30,125-dwt was said fixed to Sometra at $6,350 per day with delivery aps La Pallice for a trip to west Africa. The Orient Dispatch 2013 36,892-dwt was concluded for an inter Caribbean requirement at $8,500 basis delivery aps South West Pass.

Brokers reported the Ken Moonys 2016 37,270 dwt was fixed dlosp San Francisco 21 to 26 February for a trip via USWC redelivery Red Sea at $8,000 daily plus an $180,000 bonus. It was heard that Oldendorff had taken the IVS Merlion 2013 32,071-dwt from Singapore at $6,250 for an Australian round voyage but so far this could not be confirmed as completely accurate.
