CAPESIZE
Rio Tinto and FMG featured in the market today from West Australia and managed to secure lower rates before recovering a tick. BHP Billiton was largely absent from the market after taking half a dozen ships Tuesday.
Rio Tinto took three ships with two fixed at $4.80 (allegedly one the 2004-built Teh May) and then one more at $4.85 for end June-early July cargoes from Dampier to Qingdao. Names were elusive but it emerged the charterer also took the Maria A. Angelicoussi 2001-built Tuesday for similar dates at $4.90.
FMG booked the Southern Wisdom, a 2004-built Jiangsu Steamship relet for a 29 June-1 July 160,000-tonne 20% cargo from Port Hedland to Qingdao and then the 2012-built Fuk Hing relet on the same run at $4.75 for 1-3 July. There was also talk of a ship fixed to FMG at $4.85 on this run.
Libra covered an end June cargo from Indonesia to India in the low $4.00s while Cargill booked tonnage for a 21-30 June cargo from Richards Bay to Gangavaram at $6.10.
There had been talk of SwissMarine booking tonnage for a 22-25 June 170,000-tonnes 10% from Saldanha to Qingdao at $7.00, but this proved inaccurate and the charterer used an in-house vessel.
From Brazil, it emerged that Trafigura booked an RWE vessel for its first half July cargo from Sudeste to China on timecharter with some allegedly the equivalent rate on voyage showed $9.15 basis Tubarao to Qingdao. Details were elusive.
Noble took the 2007-built 207,960-dwt London Spirit for a 10-20 July 180,000-tonne 10% cargo from Itaguai to Qingdao, but a rate was not reported.
CCL reportedly secured both Tonkolili tenders to move 160,000-tonnes 10% each from Pepel to Qingdao with one 8-12 July and the other 12-16 July both around $9.45.
Transatlantic trading was again limited although TKS booked Cosco tonnage to move a 1-15 July cargo from Ponta da Madeira to Rotterdam at $4.62 per long ton.
Further north Cargill was said to be close to fixing the 175,800-dwwt 2011-built Polymnia from Cadiz for a Colombia around at about $5,500 daily. Some sources had been hoping for better numbers transatlantic but others said the some saw the market as overcooked.

The South American market appeared to be holding with premiums paid for super eco tonnage but it provided difficult to track with the volume of cargoes in the market difficult to ascertain.
Further north a few ships have been fixed at largely uninspiring numbers.
In the east, NoPac activity remained in short supply with the emphasis still on Australia and Indonesia cargoes split between east and India options, but with some new business some owners were sitting tight. However some charterers were able to secure tonnage on the short runs on an aps basis.
