CAPESIZE
A slow end to the week with rates off the highs seen Tuesday. The majors were largely absent from the West Australia market although Rio Tinto allegedly fixed the Pan Emerald for a 2-5 June 170,000-tonne 10% cargo from Dampier to Qingdao at $4.20, although some put the rate a few cents lower. Sources today linked the 2014-built Cape America with either Rio Tinto or an operator with a Rio Tinto cargo for 1-5 June from Dampier to Qingdao at $4.25.
BHP Billiton Thursday booked the Navios Antares 2009-built for a 4-7 June cargo from Port Hedland to Qingdao at $4.24.
Timecharter rates too eased with Jiangsu Steamship linked with the Alpha Confidence 176,320-dwt 2011-built from CJK prompt for a trip via Australia with south China redelivery only at $5,000 daily.
However the Louis Dreyfus relet Ina 176,423-dwt 2003-built fixed from Jingtang 27-31 May for a West Australian round at $6,000 daily, but a charterer was not reported. Pacific Bulk booked the 2015-built 180,000-dwt Shine On at $7,000 daily for 19 May delivery Caofeidian for an east coast Australian round.
In the Atlantic, rates dropped for transatlantic runs with K-Line securing a ballaster for a 12-21 June 165,000-tonne 10% cargo from Puerto Bolivar to Ashkelon at $5.80.

PANAMAX
A slow day in what has been a very lacklustre week with rates drifting and most waiting for more action from South America.
Most informed brokers were reluctant to suggest any particular direction but did suggest that most owners were ready to wait until next week and were almost relaxed about the market. South America rates were very mixed with some owners early gaining a bonus for May loading but today some discounting. For eco ships rates remained near or around the mid $7,000s daily range plus a low-mid $200,000s bonus.
In the east, rates were easier with some owners prepared to discount for India cargoes as this puts them in a fresh position for any upturn in the South American market. NoPac trading remained piecemeal and rates were softer.
Period interest was still evident but with paper values flat rates remained in the doldrums.
Phaethon reportedly booked the 2006-built 74,381-dwt Coronis for 25-30 May delivery Donguan for a period up to 18 February next year at $5,250 daily.

ATLANTIC
In the north Atlantic, the 73,941-dwt 1999-built Genco Beauty fixed from Gibraltar spot for a trip via the US Gulf and eastern Mediterranean at $6,000 daily with redelivery Cape Passero. A charterer was not reported.
Earlier Oxbow booked the 2012-built Kamsarmax Danhil from the Mississippi River for a trip to the Mediterranean with petcoke at $9,500 daily plus $95,000 bonus basis redelivery Cape Passero.
There was talk that Priminds booked tonnage for passing Gibraltar delivery for a trip via the US Gulf to China at $8,500 daily. The Scorpio-controlled Qi Xiang 22 75,768-dwt was linked with the business but this proved inaccurate and the ship remained in the market.
Further south, there was little new although the Angelic Peace 74,764-dwt 2001-built agreed $7,000 daily plus a $200,000 bonus with Windrose for end May delivery east coast South America to the east.
The 80,700-dwt 2010-built Inspiration fixed for early June delivery on this run at $7,300 daily plus a $230,000 bonus.
Transatlantic activity was limited here but rates have slipped with talk that the Nyon 73,035-dwt 1999-built fixed from east coast South America to Skaw-Cape Passero at $6,750 daily for early June with Cofco. However sources said this was fixed Wedneday

ASIA
Here Cargill fixed the newbuilding 82,000-dwt RB Jordana for delivery NoPac around 6 June for a trip to Singapore-Japan at $5,600 daily plus a $175,000 bonus. Sources said as a newbuilding the owner preferred to ballast and do aps.
Norvic Shipping was again active and booked the 76,310-dwt 2004-built Prabhu Yuvika from Tianjin 20-23 May for a trip via east coast Australia to east coast India at $4,500 daily and also fixed the 87,450-dwt 2011-built Annou G.O. with 21 May delivery Yosu for similar business at $5,000 daily.
SAIL has tonnage on subjects for a 5-14 June 75,000-tonne 10% or 5% cargo from Hay Point to 1 or 2 ports east coast India at $8.30 basis one to one with $7,000 daily demurrage half despatch. The charterer was also said to have fully fixed Oldendorff tonnage s from Hay Point or Dalrymple Bay to 1 to 2 east coast India at $8.55 one to one and $6,850 daily demurrage half despatch.

SUPRAMAX/HANDYSIZE
An interesting end to the week with stronger numbers being talked from the US Gulf and seemingly remaining steady elsewhere.

ATLANTIC
Various reports emerged that an Ultramax was put on subjects basis delivery US Gulf for a trip Singapore-Japan at a better $16,500 daily. From east Coast South America an Ultramax was rumoured to have to be on subject basis delivery Recalada for a trip redelivery Continent-Mediterranean in the mid $8,000s daily. A 58,000-dwt was also said on subjects for a trip also from Recalada to Turkey at close to $7,000 daily. On the period front, a 52,000-dwt open West Africa was rumoured to be close to fixing for 4 to 6 months redelivery worldwide at $7,500 daily. A Tess 52,000 was open West Africa was understood fixed to a large grain house for a trip basis delivery DOP via the US Gulf redelivery Japan at $7,600 daily.
On the smaller size range, a 34,000-dwt was linked to a trip from US Gulf to the west Mediterranean at close tio $10,000 with Pacific Basin, but this remained unconfirmed. There was a vague rumour that a 37,000 may have fixed at $10,000 from US Gulf to east Mediterranean as well. The Fengning 39,836-dwt 2014 built was rumoured to have done a voyage from Santos to Poland, but little else came out. DDSL was understood to have taken the Foxtrot 35,169-dwt 2012 built for a trip via the Black Sea with sulphur to Tunisia again on private terms. A 34,000-dwt was understood to have been covered basis delivery Skaw trip to Spain in the low $7000s.

ASIA

A 53,000-dwt open Singapore end May was also on subjects at $4,900 daily for a trip via Indonesia to south China. An Ultramax open Singapore was linked to an Australia round voyage redelivery South Korea at $6,000 with a South Korean charterer. A 57,000 dwt open Persian Gulf was understood to have been taken for a trip redelivery east coast India at $6,500 daily, but further details remained under wraps. It was reported that a 58,000-dwt achieved $7,500daily for a trip redelivery east coast India.
