CAPESIZE
A largely flat market, particularly in the east, with rates seemingly holding as the majors conceded numbers around the mid $3.00s.
Rio Tinto was said to have taken two ships today with one at $3.50 for 27 May onwards from Dampier to Qingdao. The charterer was earlier linked with the Great Sui at $3.55, reported Tuesday to BHP Billiton at $3.60, but sources said Rio Tinto denied fixing the ship.
Topsail was rumoured to have booked tonnage for a cargo from West Australia to China at $3.55, but details were not reported. There was a rumour that BHP Billiton booked a cargo from
Panocean secured the Hyundai Glovis tender to move a 30 May-4 June 170,000-tonne 10% cargo from Port Hedland to Dangjin at $3.08.
DHL reportedly booked tonnage for a 1-10 June cargo from east coast Australia to Taiwan and remained in the market. Jiangsu Steamship booked tonnage for a 1-10 June 150,000-tonne 10% cargo from Gladstone to Zhoushan, but a rate was not reported. RGL took the Samsun relet Navios Melodia 179,132-dwt 2010-built for a 1-10 June cargo from Newcastle to Zhoushan at $4.90.
The Nightlife 179,455-dwt 2015-built, which sailed Lanshan 10 May, allegedly fixed a round voyage in the east at just $4,500 daily. The 2016-built 179,000-dwt Duhallow open 16 May Caofeidian fixed on subjects in the upper $4,000s daily for a round voyage.
The DS Charme 176,000-dwt 2011-built open Hong Kong has gone, but little else emerged. Cargill was rumoured to have taken a ship in the east for 12-14 May delivery, but again reports were sketchy.
BHP Billiton fixed a SwissMarine vessel for a prompt cargo from Hay Point to Turkey possibly two points discharge at around $8.00.
Hyundai Glovis fixed a Saldanha Bay cargo to China at $5.50, but little else emerged. Cargill fixed a ship to Jiangsu Steamship for a 21-30 May cargo from Richards Bay to Gangavaram at $5.50.
Anglo American was said to have booked the 2016-built 182,000-dwt Fortune open Durban 19 May for a cargo from Acu to Qingdao at over $8.00 and now $7.90 as some suggested.
Trafigura was linked with the Anangel Unity 179,618-dwt 2015-built for an early June cargo from Sudeste to Qingdao, but a rate was not disclosed.
Noble allegedly booked the Newcastlemax Stamatis 2004-built for a 180,000-tonne 10% cargo from CSN to Qingdao at a good $8.35.
Classic Maritime booked the Cape Spencer 169,092-dwt 2010-built passing Cape of Good Hope for a trip via Nouadhibou to the east at $11,000 daily.
The Mineral Beijing 174,083-dwt 2004-built due 13 May Gibraltar was linked with Fayette for two consecutive cargoes, but details were not reported. The 171,877-dwt 2005-built Star Lady due Gibraltar 16 May was rumoured booked to Phaethon for two laden legs, but again details were not disclosed. However some linked another vessel open Taranto at $11,950 daily with redelivery in the east.


PANAMAX
A largely flat day again with rates still steady. In the north Atlantic there was less left for Baltic loaders but more cargo was expected from Kamsar. Trading was limited from the US Gulf but rates from South America were still steady with owners digging in for later positions and earlier ships still achieving reasonable rates for early positions.
In the east, rates remained a steady levels with some improvement here and there.
Period trading included talk that the 76,696-dwt 2005-built Federica Prima open Songxia prompt fixed for short period at $5,350 daily, but a charterer was not disclosed. The Gleamstar 75,491-dwt 2011-built open Jianying fixed for short period around $5,250 daily.

ATLANTIC
CJ International was linked with the 81,577-dwt 2016-builkt Astra for a trip from east coast South America to south east Asia at $7,650 daily plus a $265,000 bonus.
Cargill needed a smaller ship and booked the 2000-built 72,000-dwt QC Athina for 18 May delivery on this run at $7,250 daily plus a $210,000 bonus.
Norden fixed and failed with the Silver Dragon 74,748-dwt 2006-built for 28 May delivery east coast South America to the east at $7,300 daily and a $230,000 bonus and remained in the market.
The Graecia Universalis 73,902-dwt 2005-built was said to be on subjects for an east coast South America/east run with the ship due passing Durban 18 May, but a rate was not reported.
The Olympic Galaxy 81,383-dwt 2009-built spot Vitoria has gone for the run east with China Shipping on subjects, but details were not disclosed.
The 92,995-dwt 2012-built Junior was said on subjects for a trip from east coast South American to the east at a rate in the low $7,000s daily plus a $200,000 bonus,
The Pontonikos 74,362-dwt 2002-built open end May east coast South America went for a trip to the Continent at $6,500 daily with Louis Dreyfus. The Cape Kasos 81,403-dwt 2012-built was said on subjects for a trip from east coast South America to the east, but details were elusive.
The Ulusoy 11 79,422-dwt 2011-built went to United for a trip from Ponta Da Madeira to the Black Sea in the $8,000s daily with this replacing a ship running late.
The SBI Cakewalk 81,600-dwt 2014-built went to Ultrabulk for aps delivery Sepetiba for a trip to Mobile with steel slabs, but a rate was not reported.
Sources said the NBA Monet 82,099-dwt 2012-built open Jorf Lasfar went to EdF for a Kamsar/Fos run, but a rate was not reported.
In the US Gulf, TKS was said close to fixing a 1-10 June 70,000-tonne 10% cargo from Mobile to Rotterdam plus options at $8.45.

ASIA
Here the 2005-built 76,752-dwt open 13 May CJK fixed to Able Glory for a trip via east coast Australia to east coast India at $4,750 daily having failed with Norvic at $4,500 daily for a fertilizer run from north China to India at $4,500 daily.
Norvic took the Nicos L 2002-built 75,000-dwt from Shanghai prompt on this run at $4,100 daily.
Oldendorff booked recently the 82,301-dwt 2013-built Eva from Lanshan spot for a NoPac round at $5,500 daily and not $5,000 daily as earlier reported.
Caravel covered a 15 May cargo from Indonesia to India and claimed it was done on an aps cargo.



SUPRAMAX/HANDYSIZE
Some volume, but rates remained under pressure.

ATLANTIC
A grain house was said to have covered 50,000-tonne 10% wheat from Odessa to Durban at close to $14.00 on voyage basis with the vessel linked the Wu Gui Shan 51,000-dwt. A 56,000-dwt 2003-built was understood to have been put on subjects for a trip delivery Greece prompt redelivery US Gulf with cement at $4,750 daily. A Japanese owned Ultramax was rumoured to have been covered on subjects for a trip from the Continent to east coast Mexico but brokers suggested the rate was between $5,000 and $6,000daily. From the US Gulf the earlier report of the Iraklis 2002-built 45,635-dwt delivery US Gulf for 2-3 laden legs was corrected to $7,700 daily and redelivery worldwide and not as reported. Cofco was linked to the July M 55,567-dwt 2005 built basis delivery Ponta Da Madeira trip to the Continent at $7,500 daily. The Cape Henry 55,782-dwt 2013 built was understood to have been covered basis delivery Santos for a trip to Algeria at $7,500 daily with Cargill. AEC was linked to the Panworld 2011 built 55,675-dwt basis delivery Praia Mole for a trip to the east Mediterranean in the mid $7,000s.
A relatively slow day on the Handysize, the IVS Tembe 37,735-dwt open Nordenham 10 May was understood to have been put on subjects for a grain run but little further emerged.

ASIA
The earlier report of the Seagull 2010-built 58,000-dwt basis delivery Singapore for a trip via Indonesia to India was reportedly incorrect and the rate was $5,850 daily. The Orient Rise 56,600-dwt 2010-built open Tianjin was linked to a trip via the Far East to Mediterranean at around $3,000 daily. The Doric Javelin 206 built 57,859 was reportedly fixed basis delivery Cebu prompt trip via Indonesia redelivery west coast India $6,750 daily .
On handysize little was reported
