CAPESIZE
Rates slipped from West Australia/China as a few ships were described as 'bunching' on dates. Rio Tinto fixed two ships today for early August taking the 2010-built Louis Dreyfus relet Dong-A Leto from Dampier to Qingdao at $4.45 and another at the same rate. The CE-Duke 170,085-dwt 2001-built had been widely linked with Rio Tinto but this was largely dismissed. It emerged that the charterer Monday took the Angel II 2012-built, (after the ship failed with BHP Billiton) at $4.55, the Pacific Vista 2012-built and the Dream Canary 2015-built each for early August at $4.45.
BHP Billiton was today reported as fixing a 1-3 August cargo from Port Hedland to Qingdao at $4.45.
Elsewhere Pacific Bulk fixed the Grand Century 2005-built 174,333-dwt fixed for a trip from Indonesia to Taiwan, but a rate was not reported.
The Alpha Era 2000-built 170,387-dwt open Qingdao went for a round voyage, but little else emerged.
Atlantic activity was thin although the 2008-built 180,274-dwt Star Pauline open Gibraltar 25 July was said on subjects with NCSC for a cargo from Puerto Bolivar to Hadera at $5.25 or possibly a touch more.
Polaris took the Mount Bolivar, a Louis Dreyfus relet retroactive Singapore to move a 5-14 August cargo from Tubarao to Qingdao, but the timecharter rate was not disclosed. Some suggested the eco-ship achieved something in the $9,000s daily.

PANAMAX
Less reported fixed but the Atlantic remained tight and charterers needing prompt tonnage especially transatlantic as there were said to be cargoes from the US east coast for Continent-Mediterranean options will likely still have to pay firm rates. For good ships open Continent charterers were rumoured earlier to be talking mid $8,000 daily.
There has been limited activity from the US Gulf and some sources suggested the Chinese have been quietly ballasting ships to the gulf for first half August cargoes on the longer runs via the Cape. Charterers currently in the market were said to be looking at Supras up to Panamaxes for cargoes going via the Panama Canal. It was deemed unlikely that the grain houses will start looking at last half August cargoes until next week.
There were those that expected the South American market to top out but rates have been holding. Grain sources said more corn stems were starting to be nominated but suggested that there have been logistical problems in getting the corn to export and this could tie up tonnage. In the east, fixing has been limited but owners with tonnage in the south continued to chase the longer duration and those with quick business were likely to pay a premium. Some charterers have sourced tonnage from India.
Easing paper values earlier today curbed period interest. The Nireas 82,067-dwt 2012-built open Fukuyama 21-24 July fixed and failed with Louis Dreyfus for 8 to 10 months trading at $7,250 daily.
The Darya Gayatri 81,874-dwt 2012-built open Kosichang 21-24 July went last week allegedly to Phaeton last week for a 4 to 6 months trading at $6,500 daily. It has yet to be reported who took the Chiara D창?혲Amato 2009-built 93,271-dwt from Fujairah 23-30 July at the same rate for the same period.

ATLANTIC
Rio Tinto booked the Seatrust 2013-built 81,640-dwt for 2 to 3 laden legs with end July delivery Jorf Lasfar in the mid-high $8,000s daily range.
There was talk that Cobelfret booked a Post-Panamax from Gibraltar for a transatlantic round possibly with the 2012-built 93,755-dwt Jin Rui Feng, but details were sketchy. Some said they had fixed and failed with a 90,000-tonne 10% stem.
Louis Dreyfus was rumoured fixed or close to fixing a cargo from Novorossiysk to Haifa, but details were not reported.
The 2012-built Thisseas open Brake 21-24 July fixed on subjects to Klaveness for a trip from Murmansk to Turkey, but details were not reported.
The Eternal Grace 76,585-dwt 2006-built open Terneuzen was reported on subjects, although this ship last week was reported fixed so presumably the business failed.
D'Amico put the Epson Trader 82,656-dwt 2007-built on subjects for a single trip to move a pig iron from Ventspils to the US Gulf with some suggesting the rate was in the low-to-mid $3,000 daily range. The owner looking to reposition to take advantage for cargoes to come from the gulf, brokers said.

ASIA
Louis Dreyfus reportedly secured the Diamond Ocean 81,200-dwt 2014-built for spot delivery Haldia for two laden legs with likely India-Japan redelivery at $6,750 daily.
SAIL covered another coal cargo from east coast Australia fixing tonnage for a 20-26 August 75,000-tonne 5% cargo from Dalrymple Bay to east coast India at $9.95 with $9,000 daily demurrage.
Korea Line booked a ship open north China for a trip via Newcastle to Malaysia at a rate in the high $6,000s daily.
It emerged that the 2001-built 74,133-dwt Gallia Graeca open Hong Kong fixed last week for an east coast Australia/India run at $7,000 daily, but a charterer was not reported.
The Epiphania 80,726-dwt 2012-built spot Dalian failed on subjects, but little detail surfaced

SUPRAMAX/HANDYSIZE
Overall a flat day with brokers watching how the market will develop. The hoped-for turnaround for the east coast South American market has yet to materialise but talk of August being the month remained a topic of discussion. The Black Sea has slowed and although there were some fixtures discussed exact information was scarce. Another small plus on the indices for the Asian sector but fixture information here too appeared to have also slowed.
Period conversations today surrounded a few potential deals. A new build 63,000-dwt for delivery August in Japan was said on subjects for an unknown period at something in the $7,000s. A 55,695-dwt built 2005 was linked to a short period delivery South Korea at about $7,000 daily. A 52,000 tonner was fixed to a European charterer at $6,500 daily for about 4 to 6 months with delivery Singapore but details about a Dolphin 57 was concluded or close to at a rate in the mid-high $6,000s have so far been elusive. Sources also advised a Tess 58 was concluded for short period delivery in the Far East at something in the mid $7,000s but might have included a Red Sea redelivery option.

ATLANTIC
The Clear Sky 2014 built 63,601-dwt open Mississippi River fixed aps Chesapeake at $11,250 daily with wood pellets to UK-Continent. Bunge might have been responsible for failing a 58,000-dwt open Constantza 19 July - the level allegedly around $12,000 daily for the Far East. Details of the Pythagoras, a Mitsui 56 fixing, from the Black Sea remained elusive.
For the smaller sizes again a few reports but brokers, owners and charterers mostly unwilling to share much detail. A grain house was said to have a Handysize vessel on subjects for Rouen to US Gulf on private terms. The Four Rigoletto 2011-built 34,438-dwt fixed at $8,000 delivery Continent for a trip with scrap to the Mediterranean.

ASIA
A 55,000-dwt with a Singapore delivery was working a trip via Indonesia to Vietnam with a rate possibly in the region of $6,000 daily. Another similar size was fixed delivery Indonesia for a trip to Thailand at $8,300 daily. An Ultramax was linked to business delivery Qinzhou trip via Indonesia to west coast India at $9,000 daily.
The Shiny Halo 61,496-dwt built 2011 confirmed a sand cargo delivery dop Campha end July for a trip to Singapore at $8,500 daily.
Sources advised a 59,000-dwt was linked for a trip from South Africa to the PG, but further details not available.
In the smaller size range here, there was a rumour a 28,000-dwt built 2001 was fixed delivery Hong Kong for 3 to 5 months in the mid-upper $5,000s but this could not be verified at time of going to press.
