CAPESIZE
Rates held as the week closed out with Brazil slowing after a sudden rush of fixing towards the end of the week. Most were reluctant to call the next moves but there were operators still in the market to make nominations for cargoes. The north Atlantic continued to confound and here too many were working on sentiment rather than fact with only a handful or less of voyage fixtures to offer a guide. Transatlantic trading appeared to be kept largely off the market. In the east, West Australia/China cargoes were paying firmer numbers with stronger rates paid for a prompt cargo and but slightly less so for 3 or 4 August onwards. There have been more coal cargoes in the market and here to sentiment played a part. Predicting Monday's moves was a task most declined.

ATLANTIC
POSCO took CCL tonnage for a 10-19 August 135,000-tonne 10% cargo from Baltimore-Hampton Roads to Kwangyang at $19.78. Sources were suggesting that front haul rates were hovering in the upper teens/$20,000 daily.
XCoal allegedly covered a mid-August 125,000-tonne 10% cargo from Baltimore to Ningbo or Beilun at $21.50.
From Brazil, after failing with ECTP on dates, Cargill booked the 2010-built Squireship for a 1-10 August cargo from Tubarao to Qingdao at $12.67. Trafigura today was linked with the DHL relet Cape Ray 181,055-dwt 2014-built due Tubarao early August but a rate was not reported. The London Spirit 207,960-dwt 2007-built was reported fixed Thursday and linked with Trafigura at the $13.00 with eta 20 August but the ship remained in the market

ASIA
Here Roy Hill needed a ship to make 29 July Port Hedland and fixed tonnage at a sharply higher $5.80 for Qingdao discharge. Rio Tinto was said to have fixed a 3-5 August cargo from Dampier to Qingdao at $5.50. Cara took a Jiansgu Steamship relet, the Frontier Coronet 2011-built for a 170,000-tonne 10% cargo from Dalrymple Bay and Hay Point to China at $6.60. The 174,234-dwt 2007-built, which sailed Huanghua 19 July went for a round voyage but little surfaced. Pacific Bulk paid the 2011-built 180,491-dwt Densa Cobra $12,500 daily from Singapore reportedly for an Australian round.

PANAMAX
A slower day with the Black Sea remaining the hot spot with charterers looking further afield for tonnage. The pace from South America has been slower this week but rates reported remained at still good levels while those with ships just in ballast from the east took a relaxed view. In the east, Indonesia remained the active area with Chinese coal demand brisk but further north as tonnage grew rates for NoPac rounds slipped. Period talk included the Marina 87,036-dwt 2006-built open Qingdao 25-28 July fixing for 3 to 5 months trading at $10,750 daily. A charterer was not reported.

ATLANTIC
From this side, Atlantic Coal & Bulk took the 2012-built 81,672-dwt Ultrabulk relet Caravos Glory from the Baltic to Brazil with some suggesting $10,000 daily was agreed and others that the rate was closer to $9,000 daily.
The 73,127-dwt 1999-built Siana was briefly reported as fixing from Singapore via the Black Seas to the east at $10,500 daily but sources said the ship remained in the market.
The Iolcos Fighter 76,102-dwt 2014-built was said booked for retroactive delivery Krishnapatnam 14 July for a trip via east coast South America to the east at a rate in the high $11,000s daily and this described as punchy. The Nicos L 73,193-dwt 2002-built due 24 July Singapore fixed on subjects for east coast South America business but a rate and charterer was not disclosed. The Post-Panamax Bottiglieri Challenger 2010-built achieved $12,000 daily from PMO 1 August via South America to south-east Asia. Bunge was said to have a Kamsarmax on subjects for a 12-20 August position from east coast South America to the east but little else emerged.

ASIA
A rare back haul was rumoured fixed today with the 2013-built6 81,585-dwt Panorea fixed for 19-20 July delivery Kosichang for a trip to the Continent or Mediterranean but little else was reported.
NoPac rates slipped with the 2002-built 76,421-dwt GH Glory fixed from Tianjin to Oceanways for a trip via NoPac to China at $8,000 daily.
D'Amico fixed and failed with the 81,944-dwt 2017-built ABY Asia from Hong Kong 24-25 July for a trip via Tanjung Bara to Sual at $11,250 daily. Norden allegedly booked the Navios Hope 75,397-dwt 2005-built from Hong Kong 22 July for a trip via Indonesia to Singapore-Japan at $10,500 daily.
SAIL fixed another coal cargo from Australia booking tonnage for 8-18 August 75,000-tonnes 5% cargo from Gladstone to east coast India at $12.40.

ULTRAMAX/SUPRAMAX
Rates remained firm for east coast South America and the Black Sea with activity maintained. However, rates eased further in the US Gulf with little reported as the week closed out. The Pacific market still looked strong but it was not clear if the tonnage supply would be tight next week or the stems remaining plentiful.

ATLANTIC
The Marylisa V 52,428-dwt 2003-built was fully fixed at $11,500 delivery Mangalia via the Black Sea to Morocco. Phaethon took the SBI Thalia 2015 63,500-dwt basis retro Durban for a minimum 100 days up to about 6 months trading at $10,500 daily plus a ballast bonus of $300,00 with worldwide redelivery and relet the vessel to Cofco for its sugar to Egypt at $14,500 daily basis delivery Paranagua as the first laden leg. There was talk of Oldendorff fixing the Nord Angel 55,696-dwt 2010-built delivery Santos for a trip to Morocco but the details have not emerged. The SBI Antares 61,593-dwt 2015-built was linked to Clipper at $16,250 daily delivery Upriver to west coast South America but sources also suggested the fixture might not be fresh. Bunge reportedly took the Loch Ness 61,272-dwt 2016-built at $16,000 daily from Recalada to Italy and fixed the Mandarin Noble 2012 56,693-dwt on subjects at $17,000 daily for its grain from the US Gulf to the Philippines. Pacific Basin was rumoured to have booked a Supramax from Richards Bay to Pakistan but the rate could not be confirmed.

ASIA
A 58,000-dwt delivery Inchon was fixed for a trip to the Continent at $4,050 daily for the first 65 days thereafter at $9,250 daily as the balance. The Asia Ruby III 2014 63,023-dwt open Lanshan was also fixed for a long haul at $5,000 daily for the first 65 days and $9,500 daily afterwards redelivery west Africa with steels and general cargoes. A 57,000-dwt open Qingdao was fixed for a trip to Penang at $7,000 daily, and the Tron Legacy 2012 56,444-dwt was booked for a similar run at $7,850 daily delivery Dalian to Port Kelang. Norvic Shipping took another Supramax of $55,757-dwt at $11,000 delivery Singapore for its coal via Indonesia to India.

HANDYSIZE
The week ended on a small slide for US Gulf and east coast South America deliveries while other areas remained positive with brokers still very confident Asia will continue to improve for these sizes.

A handy was suggested fixed from the Baltic to the eastern Mediterranean at a level just over $11,000 per day. Sources reported an unknown Handysize was covered basis delivery Canakkale for grains into the Mediterranean at $7,000 but details were unavailable. The TS Bravo 2015 38,896-dwt open Nemrut Bay took a voyage based fixture from Canakkale to US Gulf but a rate was so far not reported. The Nordrhone 2015 38,036-dwt was taken from Vila do Conde but again details remained a closely guarded secret.
